Thuraya Al-Baqsami is an artist and writer from Kuwait who became active regionally as early as the mid-1960s. She studied fine arts in Cairo, then at the Surikov institute in Moscow during the Soviet era. She later lived in Zaire and Senegal until she settled back in Kuwait in the 1980s. In 1990-91 she lived through the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which immensely affected her creative output. Thuraya has held over 60 solo exhibitions worldwide, and participated in over 250 collective exhibitions spanning her long career. She has won numerous awards for both her art and her writing. She recently held her largest retrospective exhibition to date at the Sharjah Art Museum in 2017.
